That's probably as good as it gets, which is not bad. There will always be meat eaters. I suppose it could get still a little better if cows were to be off limits.

I liked your review, by the way.

Foer profiles a few farmers who raise animals on a smaller scale, and he acknowledges the relative superiority of such a model. He speaks with admiration of the rare farmer who puts animal welfare before economics. He does not go further and explore the micro-farming or harvesting you speak of. I suspect, however, that Foer would accept this as preferable to the larger operations he describes. (Foer lives in NYC, I believe, and he doesn't talk about growing one's own food either.)

Foer doesn't waffle too much on the vegetarian stance, but he leaves ideological room for those who want to eat more mindfully. In conclusion (after describing Niman Ranch in CA) he writes:

"I have placed my wager on a vegetarian diet and I have enough respect for people like Frank [cattle rancher], who have bet on a more humane animal agriculture to support their kind of farming. This is not the end of a complicated position. Nor is it a veiled argument for vegetarianism. It is an argument for vegetarianism, but it's also an argument for another, wiser animal agriculture and more honorable omnivory."

Does Foer deal with the argument for free range animals or small farm animal "harvesting" of animals raised by the family for their own consumption as an alternative to factory farms, with the idea that this alternative is better than a vegeterian solution? Perhaps he does by way of speaking of compassion?
