Passing of Srila Bhakti Sundara Govinda Maharaja

At about 4:30am today, 27 March 2010, Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj passed away from our vision by his own sweet will and surrounded by sannyasis and servitors chanting softly. His holy form was presently taken with a convoy of vehicles from our Dum Dum Park Temple, Kolkata, to Navadvipa, where this afternoon he will be given samadhi close to the Samadhi Mandir of his beloved Srila Guru Maharaj, Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj.
2 p.m. update from Nabadwip: Srila Gurudev’s holy body was brought before the deities here at Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math. Accompanied by continuous kirtana, devotees garlanded His Divine Grace and offered flowers and prayers. Bathing took place just

Srila Govinda Maharaja joined Srila Sridhara Maharaja in 1947 at the age of seventeen and it was announced shortly thereafter that he would become Srila Sridhara Maharaja’s successor. Almost forty years later this proclamation came to pass and in 1985 Srila Govinda Maharaja inherited the service of acarya of the international Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math mission. Srila Govinda Maharaja was integral in spreading Srila Sridhara Maharaja’s teachings throughout the global Gaudiya community, nourishing countless devotees in the process and continuing to guide and nourish them after the departure of his beloved Guru Maharaja. Srila Bhakti Sundara Govinda-Dev Goswami’s departure is a great loss to the Gaudiya Vaishnava community.

Very sad news indeed. All glories to Srila Govinda Maharaja.
Such a sad day for me,I was talking about Govinda Maharaj yesterday and now today i read that Sridar maharaj’s dearly belove Srila Govinda Maharaj has left this planet-What a loss of association.Another lila has ended
I would like to offer my sincere condolences to all the loving servants of Govinda Maharaja in this momentous hour of ultimate separation in love. Govinda Maharaja did a remarkable job in keeping Sri Caitanya Saraswat Math strong, vital and progressive since the passing of Sridhar Maharaja. It will be difficult for anyone to fill his shoes. Let’s all pray for the continued protection and preservation of the teachings of Sridhar Maharaja now that his most noble servitor and successor acharya has left the world and made this world a more lonely place without the loving presence of such a blessed soul.
Vaishnavas die to live and living spread the Holy Name around.
The is no sadness in Krishna consciousness.
The passing of Govinda Maharaja is simply an occasion of great joy in knowing that his soul has attained the highest spiritual perfection of the human existence.

The world has just become less auspicious without his presence in this Universe. That is something the world does not need right now, but that is our unfortunate plight on this neglected planet of a remote universe on the outer fringes of the Galaxy..
This means we all have to do better and try harder because one of the Lord’s dearest is not here anymore to invoke his mercy upon this miserable world.
What sad news for his disciples and associates. I am so sorry to hear of this news. My thoughts go out to you. Although I never met Govinda Maharaja, he must have been an exalted soul to have been in such favor of Srila Sridhar Maharaja. All glories to his Holiness.
The world seems a little smaller without Sripad Govinda Maharaja, who had so much association with our Srila Prabhupada and was so dear to Srila Sridhara Maharaja. I have many friends who have served for many years under his guidance, and he and Srila Sridhara Maharaja have left much service for them to do. They will recover from the shock, and Mahaprabhu’s mission will continue to grow. In the meantime, it’s appropriate to offer condolences to those who love him and will miss his company. He lives forever in his instructions. . . .
My deepest respects to Sripad B.S. Govinda Maharaj. Eternal glory to his service! May his followers find peace and solace in his teachings.

Sripad Govinda Maharaja made one important contribution that may not be widely known among Srila Prabhupada’s followers. In response to a request Srila Prabhupada made to Srila Sridhara Maharaja to write some pranam mantras for him, Govinda Maharaja composed the following mantras praising Prabhupada’s divine qualities and mission:
namah om visnupadaya krsna-presthaya bhutale
swami sri bhaktivedanta prabhupadaya te namah
gurvajnam sirasi-dhrtva saktyavesa sva-rupine
hare-krsneti mantrena pascatya-pracya-tarine
visvacarya prabaryaya divya karunya murtaye
sri bhagavata-madhurya-gita-jnana pradayine
gaura-sri-rupa-siddhanta-saraswati nisevine
radha-krsna-padambhoja-bhrngaya gurave namah
I offer my humble obeisances unto His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who is very dear to Lord Krsna on this earth, having taken shelter of his lotus feet.
Taking the order of his guru on his head, he became empowered by Nityananda Prabhu to act as a saktyavesa avatara. He distributed the Hare Krsna mantra all over the Eastern and Western world, delivering and uplifting all fallen souls.
He is the best of millions of jagat-gurus, because he is the personification of divine mercy. He has distributed the sweet nectar of Srimad Bhagavatam and the transcendental knowledge of Bhagavad-gita all over the world.
He is constantly engaged in exclusive devotional service to Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura, Srila Rupa Gosvami, and Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu. I offer my humble obeisances unto Srila Prabhupada, who is like a bumblebee always tasting the nectar of the lotus feet of Sri Sri Radha and Govinda.

I didn’t have much experience of Govinda Maharaja as acharya of SCS Math. I did however know him as Math manager and personal servant of Sridhara Maharaja during the years I visited there 1980 through 1984. To all of us he was an absolutely delightful devotee–so warm–so welcoming–and so helpful–with a great sense of humor. The quintessential devotee–and more. He will be missed.
I offer my most respectful obeisances to his lotus feet, and beg for his mercy, that I can also become faithful servant of my guru-maharaj, Srila Prabhupad and Srila Sridhar Maharaj.
Govinda Maharaja had everything to do with the extent to which Sridhara Maharaja made himself available to the disciples of Srila Prabhupada. It was Govinda Maharaja who managed the affairs of Sri Caitanya Saraswata Matha, and Sridhara Deva Goswami more or less put himself in Govinda Maharja’s care. Govinda Maharaja encouraged Sridhara Maharaja to extend himself in ways to us that he might not have otherwise, especially with regard to opening new and international branches of the Matha. And of course after the passing of Sridhara Maharaja Govinda Maharaja personally opened a number of international branches and expanded the literary contribution of the Matha. So we are all indebted to him. May his disciples grow in their separation from him.
