  3. HA HA HA ROBER COMIC YOU CAN’T KILL ME I’M ETERNAL SPIRIT SOUL BUT TO PROTECT THE LORDS DEVOTEE’S I MIGHT HAVE TO HUMBLY KU-OUT!

  4. What a peculiar cartoon? Does Caitanya Sangha not teach the Gaudiya principle of yukta-vairagya, by which even those clad in saffron may at times be called upon to manage and even to hold significant sums of money?

Or does it have something to do with the Mafia-style violence that devotees encounter when in India, especially in Mayapur/Navadvipa, where a Western-bodied visitor might get herself/himself killed for giving a goonda/dacoit an answer as portrayed in the cartoon? With per capita income in the USA something like 30x what it is in much of West Bengal, it may be difficult for the average Bengali to recognize as a devotee a tourist who is likely carrying on his or her person more wealth than the typical indigenous devotee will see in the course of a year or two.

I had been under the impression that devotees are taught by guru and shastra that they do indeed have a life, which they must be willing to defend in order to be able to continue with their guru-given service. The cartoon’s dilemma becomes clear when we realize that if you refuse to give money to a robber he may kill you, yet if you do give him money he may kill you anyway.

Maybe this cartoon was meant for brahmacharis who can’t bring themselves to admit that they would be happier and more functional in the grihastha ashram, but otherwise it just seems theologically confused. Sorry.

    • Ardha Buddhi – you are using half (ardha) your intelligence (buddhi) trying to make some philosophical or theological sense out of this cartoon. Discriminating intelligence, even half of it, is not the way to read a comic. Try using wit: intelligence wrapped up in humor. Not everyone is born with wit, but the artist here has plenty.
Plain and simple, this is a joke. The joke being that this cartoon renunciate doesn’t have any money, and he doesn’t have his life because it is given in seva. Don’t make any more out of it than that, or that this cartoon is preaching any principle. Just laugh. Have philosophical questions about other articles. 😉
